Maureen arrived the next morning with Sally and a crowd of other folks, all bearing gifts. Some brought food, others drink, while her two favourite nurses took care of flowers and prettying Denise up for her wedding in the afternoon. Maureen produced a sleek little cream cotton dress, decorated with lace trim. Its fit was a little on the loose side, but Sally took care of that with discreetly placed pins. Maureen offered her a matching silk headscarf, but Denise shook her head. She’d feel a lot more comfortable without it.

The many hands made light work of moving furniture around to make room for the ceremony and celebration. While tradition would have dictated that Ian not see her on the eve of their wedding, her situation offered a certain level of dispensation, and they only banished him when it came time to dress her up.

Father Andrews was a small, slight man with a big personality. Denise took an instant liking to him, and it pleased her that he would be the one to marry them. They kept the ceremony brief but sweet. When Ian produced a thin gold band and slipped it onto her ring finger, a thrill of pleasant surprise brought tears to her eyes. A ring was the last thing she’d expected in all the hurry.

Maureen’s husband took a few photos for Ian, and then it was done. Denise slept through most of the after party, which they kept short. The house emptied on the wings of well wishes and tears. How could it be that such relative strangers could give her so much more love than her family had done in her final months?

In the early evening, Ian called it a night and got her undressed and into bed. He took care to pack the dress back into its protective plastic sleeve and hung it up. Through sleepy lids, Denise asked him to leave her nightie in its drawer. Even if they didn’t manage anything, she wanted to lay skin to skin with him. Naked, standing by the edge of the bed, Ian said, ‘Move over, Mrs Willis—your man’s coming to bed.’ Accompanied by her soft laughter, he eased beneath the duvet and pulled her close.

The early part of the night followed much the same pattern as the night prior, but a little after one o’clock, Denise came into her second wind. Joyfully, she spread her sails and rode the breeze.

Her kisses brought Ian to full wakefulness, and her hand had him standing to attention in no time at all. He kissed her and let his hands roam, and soon had her whimpering and writhing with need. When he lay atop her, nudging at her wet and throbbing entrance, the anticipation felt almost unbearable. But that was nothing compared to when he pushed into her and lay fully sheathed within.

Although not particularly big, he knew how to use it, and hit all the right places. And his hands, lips, and tongue took care of the rest. Oh, to have him inside her at last.
